Maldives Police Service has reported 36 scam-related cases over the past week, with victims losing a total of MVR 118,370.05 to various forms of fraud.

According to police statistics, officers were able to recover MVR 164,240.60 through intervention efforts during the same period, helping to reduce the financial impact on victims.

E-commerce fraud accounted for the majority of reported incidents, with 26 cases recorded.

Other reports included four impersonation scams, one currency exchange scam, and five cases classified under other categories.

Police stated that scammers commonly used online messaging applications, iBay, phone calls, phishing links, and Facebook Marketplace to target victims.

The latest figures show that online shopping scams remain the most frequently reported type of fraud in the country.

Authorities noted that many victims were deceived into sending money for goods or services that were never delivered.

In response to the continued rise in e-commerce scams, police have urged the public to exercise caution when making online purchases.

Consumers are advised to verify the legitimacy of sellers, avoid making advance payments to unknown individuals, and use secure payment methods whenever possible.

Authorities also recommended confirming that businesses are genuine before completing transactions and withholding payment until products are received where practical.
