The government is placing greater emphasis on ocean research and the identification of marine resources as part of efforts to diversify the Maldivian economy and strengthen long-term sustainability, according to Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam.

In a message marking World Oceans Day, the minister said the administration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu is committed to expanding scientific research into the country's vast marine environment to unlock new economic opportunities.

Shiyam noted that with more than 99 percent of the Maldives consisting of ocean, the nation's economy, food security, and livelihoods remain closely tied to the health and sustainability of its marine resources.

He stressed the importance of protecting ocean ecosystems and preserving them for future generations.

The minister also highlighted the growing importance of self-sufficiency amid global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions, describing it as a key national priority.

Addressing challenges facing the fisheries sector, Shiyam pointed to the impact of climate change and rising sea temperatures on fish stocks.

He noted that skipjack tuna catches in the Indian Ocean declined during 2024, contributing to an extended off-season for the country's fishing industry.

The minister said the government is advancing several initiatives aimed at increasing value addition within the fisheries sector while expanding aquaculture activities.

Among these efforts is the introduction of seaweed farming in the Maldives, with the country's first export shipment already completed.

He added that two additional companies have entered the industry through new investments and operations.

According to Shiyam, a new project focused on developing seaweed-based products has also received support from the Food and Agriculture Organization, while discussions are underway with the Japanese government on additional cooperation in the sector.

Highlighting the ongoing Ocean Decade initiative, the minister reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to marine research, innovation, and the adoption of new technologies.

He said the government aims to ensure Maldivians play a leading role in harnessing the economic potential of the country's marine resources while promoting sustainable ocean management.
