Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam has urged member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take decisive action in support of the Palestinian cause and uphold their collective responsibility to protect the rights and interests of the Muslim Ummah.

The minister made the call on Thursday while addressing an Extraordinary Meeting of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The meeting marked her first participation in an OIC session since assuming office as foreign minister.

During her address, Minister Iruthisham condemned Israel's continued occupation and annexation of Palestinian territories and raised concerns over what she described as the lack of meaningful action to ensure accountability for violations of international law.

She reaffirmed the Maldives' commitment to supporting justice and defending the fundamental rights of the Palestinian people, emphasizing the shared responsibility of OIC member states to act in accordance with the principles and values of the Islamic community.

The foreign minister also reiterated the Maldives' longstanding support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

She further highlighted the importance of implementing a comprehensive plan to bring an end to the conflict in Gaza, describing it as an essential step toward restoring peace and stability in the region.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Iruthisham held discussions with foreign ministers from several OIC member states.

The talks focused on strengthening cooperation and reaffirming the Maldives' longstanding relationship with the organization.

The OIC, which consists of 57 member states, remains one of the world's largest multilateral organizations and continues to play a prominent role in advocating for the rights of the Palestinian people.

The Maldives has been a member of the organization since 1976 and continues to actively participate in its initiatives and diplomatic engagements.
