Police crack down on drug network accused of exploiting children
The Maldives Police Service has arrested two men in GA. Vilingili as part of an operation targeting individuals accused of using minors in drug trafficking activities.
The arrests were made during a joint operation conducted by GA. Vilingili Police and Counter Narcotics Intelligence.
The operation focused on identifying and dismantling networks suspected of exploiting children in the sale and distribution of illegal drugs.
Authorities carried out coordinated searches at four residences on the morning of May 28.
During the operation, officers seized 66.92 grams of suspected narcotics, including 53.91 grams of brown sugar(heroin) and 13.01 grams of methamphetamine.
Police identified the suspects as Mohamed Athoof Habeeb, 25, and Mohamed Raaif Hussain, 20, both from GA. Vilingili.
Following their appearance before the court, Mohamed Athoof was remanded in custody for 15 days, while Mohamed Raaif Hussain was ordered detained for 10 days pending further investigation.
According to police, the operation was conducted in line with recent amendments to the Drugs Act, which place greater emphasis on protecting and rehabilitating individuals exploited in drug trafficking activities.
The case also forms part of broader efforts under the Child Rights Protection Act to prevent the criminal exploitation of minors and strengthen child safeguarding measures.
Investigations into the case remain ongoing.
