Maldivian tuna set for greater access to UK market following tariff suspension
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has welcomed the United Kingdom’s decision to suspend tariffs on Maldivian tuna exports, describing the move as a significant step that will create new opportunities for Maldivian fish products in the British market.
In a statement shared on his official X account, the President said the tariff suspension, which came into effect on 20 May 2026, would provide substantial benefits to the Maldives’ fisheries industry while also supporting consumers in the UK.
He noted that the development is expected to strengthen the incomes of local fishermen, support livelihoods across island communities, and expand market access for sustainably caught Maldivian tuna products.
President Dr. Muizzu highlighted the Maldives’ international reputation for its pole-and-line fishing practices and long-standing commitment to sustainable fisheries management.
He stated that the UK’s decision reflects the strong partnership between the two countries and their shared emphasis on sustainable trade and economic resilience.
The President also expressed appreciation to the UK government and all stakeholders involved in facilitating the tariff suspension, describing it as an important achievement for both the fisheries sector and the wider Maldivian economy.
Securing the removal of tariffs on Maldivian tuna exports was among the key priorities discussed during President Dr. Muizzu’s official visit to the UK last year.
The government has since continued efforts to strengthen the international presence of Maldivian fish products and diversify export opportunities in global markets.
The UK currently ranks as the second-largest export destination for Maldivian tuna, with the Maldives recognised as the ninth-largest supplier of tuna products to the British market.
