The World Health Organization has officially declared the ongoing Ebola outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) following the emergence of cases across multiple countries.

In a statement released today, the WHO said the outbreak now poses a serious global health risk and requires urgent international coordination to contain further spread of the virus.

The declaration comes after authorities confirmed Ebola outbreaks in both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda last week.

Health authorities worldwide are now increasing surveillance and preparedness measures in response to the escalating situation.

The Health Protection Agency(HPA) stated that it is closely monitoring developments following the WHO’s announcement.

While officials assessed the likelihood of Ebola reaching the country as currently low, precautionary measures are being reinforced to ensure national readiness.

The agency has also advised the public to avoid non-essential travel to countries affected by the outbreak, urging travellers to remain vigilant and follow international health guidance.

Ebola is a severe and often fatal viral disease transmitted through direct contact with infected bodily fluids.

Previous outbreaks have highlighted the importance of rapid containment efforts, cross-border cooperation, and public awareness in limiting transmission.
