Foreign Ministry stresses care in public commentary on external relations
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to pursuing an independent and principled foreign policy grounded in national interests and sovereignty.
In a statement issued today, the Ministry emphasized that the Government’s foreign policy remains guided by a “Maldives First” approach, focusing on safeguarding national sovereignty, promoting and protecting human rights, and upholding both national and international law.

The Ministry also stressed that public commentary on foreign policy matters carries significant implications, particularly when made by individuals who have previously held high public office.
It noted that such statements should contribute to informed dialogue, national unity, and public confidence in state institutions, urging caution and sound judgement when addressing issues that may affect the Maldives’ external relations and national interests.

Reiterating its position, the Government affirmed its commitment to further strengthening bilateral and multilateral ties while advancing a foreign policy that reflects the sovereignty, dignity, and long-term interests of the Maldivian people.
The statement comes in the wake of recent remarks by former President Mohamed Nasheed, who said that Mauritius remains open to dialogue with the Maldives despite the current suspension of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
