Maldives President calls for stronger support for thalassemia patients
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has underscored that International Thalassemia Day serves as a powerful reminder of the values of humanity and compassion in supporting individuals and families affected by the condition.
In a message shared on social media to mark the annual observance on May 8, the President highlighted the importance of fostering kindness and solidarity, particularly towards Maldivian children and families living with thalassemia.
He stressed that the occasion reinforces a collective responsibility to uphold these humanitarian values in building a stronger and more resilient nation.
President Muizzu further emphasised that individuals living with thalassemia should be regarded with the same care and concern as one’s own family members. He noted that ensuring access to essential healthcare services, social protection, and equal opportunities remains a fundamental duty of the government.
Observed globally each year, International Thalassemia Day aims to raise awareness about the condition, support those affected, and honour the memory of individuals who have lost their lives to the disease.
This year’s theme, “Hidden no more: Finding the undiagnosed. Supporting the unseen,” highlights the importance of identifying undiagnosed cases and ensuring that those affected receive timely care and support.
