Maldives–Sri Lanka agreements to deliver tangible benefits: President Dr. Muizzu

Maldives–Sri Lanka agreements are set to translate into tangible benefits for citizens, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said following high-level talks in Colombo.

The discussions were held with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat as part of President Muizzu’s ongoing State Visit to Sri Lanka.

During the talks, both leaders reaffirmed the longstanding and close relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, which marked 60 years of formal diplomatic ties in July 2025.

They also highlighted the strong people-to-people connections and the contributions made by citizens of both countries to each other’s development.

Speaking at a joint press conference, President Muizzu described the discussions as “highly productive,” adding that the visit marks “the beginning of a renewed and forward-looking partnership” between the two countries.

He emphasised that while several agreements were signed across key sectors, the priority now is implementation.

He stated

The agreements cover a broad range of areas, including trade and investment, healthcare, defence and security, education, youth and sports development, fisheries, environment, and social development.

Economic cooperation featured prominently in the discussions, with President Muizzu noting a shared commitment to expanding trade and investment flows and “unlocking new business opportunities.”

He also highlighted the importance of creating a more enabling and investor-friendly environment.

Looking ahead, he said the Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum will serve as a key platform to connect businesses, investors, and innovators from both countries.

On education and youth empowerment, the President stressed the need to equip young people for future challenges, stating that the goal is to equip our young people with the skills needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

As island nations, President Muizzu underscored the shared responsibility of both countries in safeguarding the Indian Ocean, stating that

our future is inseparable from the Indian Ocean

He reaffirmed commitments to sustainable fisheries, marine protection, and maritime security cooperation.

Climate change was also highlighted as a critical area of concern, with both countries pledging stronger collaboration and international advocacy to build resilience against its impacts.

President Dr. Muizzu concluded that the visit signals a new phase in bilateral relations, reaffirming the Maldives’ commitment to deepening this partnership and promoting peace, stability, and shared prosperity in the region.
