Immigration detains eight illegally residing expats in Hulhumalé
Maldives Immigration has detained eight expatriates for residing illegally in the country following a targeted inspection carried out in Hulhumalé Phase 2.
The operation, conducted under the Migration Monitoring and Compliance Program (MMCP), involved screening a total of 19 expatriates.
Authorities confirmed that eight individuals were found to be in violation of immigration regulations and were subsequently taken into custody.
Officials said the operation forms part of broader government efforts to address the growing issue of undocumented expatriates.
The initiative is being carried out in coordination with relevant agencies to strengthen monitoring and enforcement mechanisms nationwide.
According to Immigration, the presence of undocumented foreign workers has contributed to a range of social and economic challenges in the Maldives.
In response, authorities are working to compile comprehensive data on the expatriate population while taking action against individuals residing illegally or conducting business activities unlawfully under local proxies.
As part of the ongoing nationwide data collection exercise, information on more than 202,000 expatriates has already been recorded.
Authorities have also announced that deportation measures will begin from the 2nd of next month for individuals who fail to submit complete and accurate information.
The government has reiterated its commitment to tightening immigration controls and ensuring compliance with existing regulations.
