Meekail Ahmed Naseem, Member of Parliament for the South Galolhu constituency and a candidate for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Chairperson position, has formally called for action against the party’s Deputy Chairperson, Ibrahim Waheed (Ibrey), over alleged involvement in a rival campaign.

The request was made in a letter addressed to MDP Interim Chairperson Abdul Ghafoor Moosa.

In his letter, Meekail stated that he had received multiple complaints regarding Waheed’s direct participation in campaign activities supporting former President Mohamed Nasheed, who is also contesting for the chairperson role.

He added that these allegations are supported by photographs and videos circulating in both mainstream and social media.

Meekail stressed that the Deputy Chairperson  holds responsibility for overseeing membership affairs and the conduct of party elections, and must therefore remain neutral while upholding the highest standards of integrity.

He argued that Waheed’s visible support for a specific candidate creates an uneven playing field and undermines the credibility, fairness, and transparency of the electoral process.

Quoting from his letter, Meekail stated that for a senior party official to openly back a candidate constitutes a violation of the rights of other candidates and party members, describing it as a serious injustice.

He further noted that his decision to contest the chairperson position is driven by a commitment to rebuilding trust among party members and preventing similar concerns from arising in the future.

As part of his request, Meekail called for Ibrahim Waheed to step aside from his official duties for the duration of the campaign period.

The letter concluded with an appeal for the Interim Chairperson to investigate the matter and take appropriate action in accordance with the party’s rules and procedures.
