The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has opened applications for its upcoming Chairperson election, according to an announcement issued on Wednesday.

The party stated that applications will be accepted from today until the 2nd of next month, ahead of the internal vote scheduled for June 12.

Voting is set to take place between 14:30 and 20:00.

MDP also confirmed that only members registered with the party will be eligible to participate in the election.

To qualify for the position, candidates must meet the eligibility criteria required for Members of Parliament, as outlined in Article 73 of the Constitution and Article 8 of the Parliamentary Elections Act.

Several prominent figures have already expressed interest in contesting the post, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, Galolhu South MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem, and former MP Alhan Fahmy.

The position became vacant following the resignation of Fayyaz Ismail.

In the interim, Hanimadhoo MP Abdul Gafoor Moosa is serving as Chairperson.
