Maldives’ national airline, Maldivian, has announced the launch of its first-ever scheduled flights to Australia, with operations set to begin on May 17.

According to Island Aviation Services, the inaugural direct flight from the Maldives to Melbourne will depart on May 17, with the return journey scheduled for May 19.

The airline will initially operate one weekly flight on this route.

The new service follows a bilateral air services agreement signed between the Maldives and Australia on March 19, marking a significant step in strengthening aviation links between the two countries.

This also represents the first time Maldivian will operate flights to Australia.

Australia remains an important source market for the Maldivian tourism industry.

Data from the Ministry of Tourism shows that 6,526 Australian visitors travelled to the Maldives during the first two months of this year.

Aviation analysts note strong and growing demand for travel between Australia and the region.

Regional carriers, including SriLankan Airlines, currently operate multiple weekly flights to Australia, reflecting the market’s potential.

Industry stakeholders believe Maldivian’s entry into the Australian market will help boost tourist arrivals, not only from Australia but also from connecting destinations.

The airline is also preparing to expand further into Western markets as part of its broader strategy to increase international connectivity.

At present, Maldivian operates flights to several destinations across Asia, including China, Bangladesh, and India.
