Former President Mohamed Nasheed has called for the creation of a multi-party interim government, citing what he described as a loss of public confidence in President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and his administration.

The call came following confirmation from the President’s Office that 10 members of the 20 member cabinet had resigned.

Nasheed made the appeal in a post on X, where he said the recent wave of cabinet resignations, along with the ongoing dismissals and departures from various state-owned enterprises and the President’s Office, reflected growing instability at the highest levels of government.

The President has lost confidence in the Cabinet, and the public has lost confidence in the President,

Nasheed wrote

The former president, who currently serves on the five-member interim committee overseeing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), said the situation now warrants the formation of an interim government representing all political parties.

I call for the formation of an all-party interim government to implement essential structural reforms and to organize and conduct a free and fair election,

He added

He also noted that the Maldivian economy is beginning to feel serious repercussions from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, further intensifying public concern and financial uncertainty.

At this critical juncture, the adverse effects of the war have begun to severely impact the nation's economy.

Nasheed added

Nasheed’s remarks come amid heightened political tension and speculation over the government’s stability following the slew of high-profile resignations.
