A petition seeking to convene a National Council meeting to take a no-confidence vote against Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, Interim Chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has been submitted with 55 signatures from council members.

Ghafoor was elected to the interim post on December 8, 2025, with the support of 65 members of the party’s 123-member National Council.

The petition, signed by several prominent figures within the party, calls for the council to deliberate on his removal, citing concerns over leadership and internal management.

According to the document, party members had contested the recent Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections with significant personal financial contributions, which it said contributed to the party’s success.

It further states that Ghafoor was entrusted with the interim chairmanship to organise action against government misconduct and governance challenges, particularly during a period of global instability.

However, the petition alleges that he has failed to fulfil these responsibilities and has acted in violation of party statutes.

Among the concerns raised are the recent dismissals of the party’s Legal Director Ahmed Mauroof and Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed.

The petition claims that no justification was provided for the dismissals, adding that the removal of the Legal Director at a time when the party is engaged in multiple election-related cases has caused concern among members.

It warns that such decisions risk undermining party unity, eroding public support, and triggering internal divisions.

The move comes amid renewed tensions within the MDP, following a leadership decision not to allow former president Mohamed Nasheed and former party chairperson Fayyaz Ismail to address a recent Local Council Election victory rally.

The decision prompted Nasheed and several of his supporters to boycott the event, highlighting growing internal disagreements within the party.

Signatories to the petition include former chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, former chairperson Mariya Ahmed Didi, and Women’s Branch President Rozaina Adam.

The petition calls on the National Council to convene a meeting and consider a motion to remove the interim chair.
