President Dr. Muizzu highlights power of sports in national development
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has called on Maldivians to view sports as more than a recreational activity, urging its adoption as a lifelong pursuit that promotes excellence, unity and social harmony.
In a message marking the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace, the President highlighted the significant role sports play in enhancing physical well-being while fostering peace, cooperation and development at both national and global levels.
He noted that sports serve as an effective tool in addressing societal challenges such as drug abuse, corruption and violent extremism, while also instilling discipline, resilience, teamwork and respect among young people.

he wrote
The President also pointed to progress made in the country’s sports sector, including reforms to the Maldives Sports Act, the establishment of the Sports Development Fund (Maldives), and the continued recognition of athletes through the Maldives Sports Awards.
He further highlighted government initiatives such as expanding sports infrastructure, introducing the Arutha International Scholarship programme and ensuring equal pay for national athletes regardless of gender.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the President said efforts will continue to strengthen the sector, with the aim of building a healthier, more united society while driving national progress and long-term development.
