Fayyaz attributes MDP election gains to shared vision
Fayyaz Ismail, former chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, has attributed the party’s strong performance in Saturday’s elections to unity and a shared political vision.
In a post on social media platform X, Fayyaz congratulated newly elected MDP councillors and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) members, describing the outcome as the result of collective effort and grassroots support from party members.
He said the results reflected a clear message from voters, while also thanking senior party figures including former presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, as well as the party’s interim leadership, for their roles in securing the outcome.
Fayyaz characterised the election results and referendum outcome as a signal of public dissatisfaction with the current administration, adding that voters had placed their trust in the opposition to hold the government accountable.
He further stated that the results were driven by opposition groups setting aside differences to work toward a common objective, and said the MDP would continue efforts to represent public sentiment and push for political change.
Fayyaz, who previously stepped down as party chairperson, has been widely credited within the party for efforts to maintain unity during a period of internal division, including following the formation of a breakaway faction.
He has continued to advocate for cohesion within the party, a role that has been acknowledged by senior leaders and party members.
