Cities Minister pledges impartial cooperation with new councils
Adam Shareef Umar, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, has pledged to work impartially with all newly elected local councils and Women’s Development Committees following Saturday’s elections.
In a statement shared on social media after the conclusion of voting, the minister congratulated successful candidates and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to administrative neutrality despite a shifting political landscape.
He said the ministry would engage with all councils collaboratively and without discrimination, stressing that this approach would be consistently upheld across all jurisdictions.
The remarks come as results indicate that candidates from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party have secured a majority of local council seats.
Adam Shareef also outlined expectations for the incoming councils, expressing confidence in their role in advancing community development and promoting social inclusivity.
He added that the outcome of the elections would bring renewed momentum to the Maldives’ decentralised governance system as the newly elected councils prepare to assume office.
