Abdulla Shahid, President of the Maldivian Democratic Party, has said that the outcome of Saturday’s elections reflects growing public dissatisfaction with the government’s policies.

In a post shared on social media platform X on Sunday, Shahid pointed to the opposition party’s strong performance in the Local Council and mayoral elections, describing it as a resurgence of the party’s “yellow wave” across the Maldives.

He said the results send a clear signal from voters regarding concerns over what he characterised as inconsistent policies and a lack of clear direction by the government.

Shahid also expressed appreciation to party members and supporters involved in the campaign, adding that the MDP remains committed to serving the public in line with the views and priorities of the Maldivian people.

Yesterday's results indicate that the MDP secured mayoral seats in Malé, Kulhudhuffushi, Thinadhoo, Addu, and Fuvahmulah.

The party has also won a significant number of council seats and positions in the Women’s Development Committees.
