I accept the results of today’s Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections, as well as the public referendum, with full respect. Preliminary results from the polls indicated that the public referendum did not reflect the government’s proposed stance.
In addition, the ruling party experienced setbacks in several key city mayoral races, while overall council seats appear to be relatively evenly divided between the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
