Maldives local elections see opposition MDP hold all five mayoral seats
Provisional results from the Maldives’ Local Council Elections indicate that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party has retained control of the mayoral offices in all five major cities.
In Malé City, incumbent Adam Azim holds the lead with 45.49% of the vote, while his closest challenger, Moosa Ali Jaleel, trails at 28.77%.
In Kulhudhuffushi City, Mohamed Athif secured a second term with a decisive 68.47% of the vote, defeating Ibrahim Hassan, who received 31.53%.
Preliminary counts from Addu City showed Ali Nizar leading with 66.74%, while PNC candidate Mushrif Ali came second with 29.88%.
In Fuvahmulah City, incumbent Ismail Rafeeq retained his seat with 73.20%, ahead of PNC’s Ali Maseeh, who garnered 26.80%.
The race in Thinadhoo City remained closely contested, with incumbent Saudh Ali narrowly ahead at 51.71%, followed closely by Mohamed Ajeeb at 48.29%.
Officials noted that extended voting hours in Malé and Addu, due to long queues, delayed the sealing of ballot boxes.
As a result, final results are yet to be fully consolidated.
All figures remain provisional and as of 23:00 PM
The outcome reinforces the MDP’s strong position in local governance, as the party also holds a majority in the respective City Councils across the five urban centers.
