In a significant step towards strengthening healthcare decentralisation, Addu Equatorial Hospital (AEH), in collaboration with the National Cardiac Center, has launched advanced cardiac treatment services, bringing critical heart care closer to patients in the southern atolls.

The services were introduced during a specialised medical mission conducted from March 31 to April 2, marking the rollout of primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedures at AEH.

PCI is a life-saving intervention used to restore blood flow in patients experiencing heart attacks, significantly improving survival rates and clinical outcomes.

In addition to PCI, the visiting team of specialists established other essential cardiac services, including the implantation of Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (ICDs) and permanent pacemakers.

During the three-day initiative, medical teams carried out 11 angiograms and six angioplasty procedures, providing critical treatment to patients in the region.

The introduction of advanced cardiac care at AEH marks a major milestone for residents of the southern atolls, significantly reducing the need for emergency medical transfers to Malé or overseas.
