Major parties wrap up campaigning ahead of Maldives elections and referendum
Campaigning for the upcoming elections and national referendum has officially concluded, with the country’s two main political parties holding large-scale rallies to mark the end of their efforts.
The People's National Congress (PNC) and the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) wrapped up their campaigns with major marches attended by hundreds of supporters.
The referendum, scheduled for tomorrow, will determine whether elections for Local Councils, Women’s Development Committees, the Presidency, and Parliament should be consolidated and held on a single day.
Both parties had engaged in extensive campaigning in the lead-up to the vote, with today’s rallies serving as the final push to mobilise supporters.
The PNC march was led by President Mohamed Muizzu, while the MDP rally was headed by former presidents Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Mohamed Nasheed.
Supporters at both events carried banners, placards, and party flags, showcasing campaign messages, candidate images, and party symbols.
Voting is set to begin at 8:00 AM tomorrow and will continue until 4:00 PM.
In line with electoral regulations, all campaign activities were required to cease by 6:00 PM this evening.
