The government has announced plans to introduce strict legal measures against individuals who dispose of waste on beaches and into the ocean, as part of efforts to tackle growing environmental concerns.

Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim said there has been a noticeable increase in illegal dumping in unauthorized areas, particularly affecting coastal zones and marine ecosystems.

In response, new regulations are currently being finalized for implementation in the near future.

Proper waste management is essential as it is directly linked to our national economy,

Minister Thoriq stated

Under the proposed rules, individuals found littering in these areas will face significant fines.

The Minister stressed the importance of strong monitoring and enforcement to safeguard the Maldives’ natural environment.

He further noted that authorities will take action to identify and penalize those responsible for polluting the ocean, highlighting the need for stricter oversight.

Concerns over marine pollution remain widespread, with reports of increasing amounts of plastic waste, including bottles, being discarded into lagoons and surrounding waters.
