Government expands ambulance services to improve healthcare access

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced an expansion of ambulance services under the Aasandha scheme, with the revised coverage set to take effect from April 1, 2026.

The update, which the President announced in a press conference held at the President's Office introduces additional categories for medical transport, including services for bedridden individuals, wheelchair users, and persons with disabilities such as physical and mental impairments, autism, and Down syndrome.

These groups will now be eligible for transport to access outpatient care.

The expanded coverage also includes transfers between healthcare facilities for further treatment or specialist referrals, as well as transport to jetties and airports for medical evacuations and overseas treatment.

In addition, individuals living with thalassaemia who require outpatient services will be covered under the revised scheme.

Existing services, including emergency ambulance transport and the transfer of deceased individuals, will remain unchanged.

According to the President, the decision was made in response to longstanding public requests for improved accessibility.

He noted that the policy revision was developed following consultations with relevant stakeholders and assessments to ensure both technical feasibility and financial sustainability.
