Maldives to launch new measures to accelerate TB elimination: President Dr. Muizzu
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to achieving a tuberculosis-free future, outlining new efforts to strengthen early detection, diagnostics, and care for vulnerable groups.
In a message marking World Tuberculosis Day, the President noted that TB continues to pose a significant public health challenge globally, regionally, and locally, despite progress in prevention and treatment.
He stated that the Maldives remains proud of its status as a low TB burden country and is committed to becoming a leader in eliminating the disease.
The President highlighted that this year marks the start of key foundational initiatives aimed at accelerating progress.
These include improving early detection, expanding access to rapid diagnostics and quality treatment, strengthening surveillance systems, and ensuring better support for vulnerable populations.
He emphasised that continued progress will depend on coordinated national efforts, the dedication of healthcare professionals, and active community participation in prevention and care.
The President also expressed appreciation to health workers and community members for their ongoing contributions to TB prevention, detection, and treatment, both in the Maldives and globally.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to sustaining its low TB burden status and advancing efforts towards elimination through collective action.
World Tuberculosis Day is observed annually on March 24, this year’s theme is “Yes! We Can End TB: Led by Countries, Powered by People.”
