Maldives targets big-game fishing and diving tourism growth
Maldives government is advancing plans to diversify its tourism sector by developing new opportunities in sport fishing, diving, and niche tourism segments.
Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim said efforts are underway to regulate sport fishing and big-game fishing to establish them as viable industries.
He noted that the combined global market for these activities is valued at approximately USD 7.2 billion, presenting significant potential for the Maldives.
In addition, the government is working to expand opportunities in both technical and recreational diving, aiming to attract a broader range of visitors and experiences.
The minister also highlighted ongoing initiatives to make arrangements easier for workers of superyacht and liveaboards.
The government is also developing systems that would enable operators to participate in halal tourism, as well as creating avenues for education-based and research-focused tourism.
According to Minister Thoriq, these measures are part of a broader strategy to diversify tourism offerings and strengthen the sector’s long-term growth.
