Maldives and Australia have signed a bilateral agreement paving the way for direct flights between the two countries, marking a significant step in strengthening aviation, tourism, and trade links.

The agreement was formalised during a ceremony held at the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen announced that the aeronautical authorities of both nations had signed a Memorandum of Understanding to advance a Bilateral Air Services Agreement.

In a statement shared on X, Ameen said the agreement removes all restrictions on airlines operating between the Maldives and Australia, effective immediately.

He noted that the move is expected to unlock new opportunities for connectivity, tourism growth, and economic cooperation.

Authorities confirmed that, under the new arrangement, airlines from both countries will be able to operate without limitations, facilitating easier travel between the two destinations.

Maldives’ national carrier, Maldivian, is currently preparing to commence operations under the new framework.
