Global airlines expand Maldives operations as demand rises
Several international airlines have increased flights to the Maldives as travellers reroute to avoid airspaces affected by the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Swiss carrier Edelweiss Air has expanded its Zurich to Malé service from four to five weekly flights during April and May in response to rising demand for direct routes.
Meanwhile, Air India has added 78 international flights across nine destinations, including the Maldives, deploying A320neo aircraft and introducing 17,600 additional seats while avoiding conflict-affected airspace.
Russian airline Aeroflot has also increased frequencies to Malé and other destinations, citing stronger tourist demand amid global travel disruptions.
Private jet arrivals have also surged, data from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) shows 128 private jets landed between February 28 and March 14, a 166 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Alongside Velana International Airport, Maafaru Airport has become a key hub for private aviation, accommodating up to 25 jets simultaneously during peak season.
Recent upgrades now allow the airport to handle up to 800 flight movements annually.
