The Criminal Court has granted conditional release to Hassan Fawaz, a 21 year old accused in connection with the killing of Naeema Moosa in N. Manadhoo.

Fawaz was released from pre-trial detention following a request by the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Maldives, which cited concerns over his health condition.

According to the prosecutor’s office, the Maldives Correctional Service informed authorities earlier this month that Fawaz was unable to receive adequate medical care while in custody.

Based on medical advice, the office sought his release as a special measure to safeguard his constitutional right to life.

The court approved the request after Fawaz agreed to a set of strict conditions.

These include refraining from committing any offences, attending all scheduled court hearings, and observing a curfew requiring him to remain indoors between 18:00 p.m. and 08:00 a.m., except for medical purposes.

He is also required to report daily to the nearest police station between 08:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., unless seeking medical treatment, and is barred from leaving Malé.

In addition, the court has prohibited him from contacting or attempting to influence any witnesses involved in the case.

Fawaz must also submit updated medical reports to both the prosecutor’s office and the court every 15 days.

Authorities stated that compliance with these conditions will be closely monitored by the correctional service and the police, with any breach likely to result in his return to custody.

He faces multiple charges, including intentional murder using a sharp object, obstruction of justice, and the indecent treatment of a body.

Prosecutors have indicated that they have gathered substantial evidence to support the charges against him.
