Majority in parliament key to Governance: Nasheed
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has stated that effective governance in the Maldives is not possible without securing a majority in the People’s Majlis, emphasizing the importance of parliamentary support in administering the country.
Speaking during a visit to B. Thulhaadhoo, Nasheed highlighted the need for structural reforms within the current system of governance.
He noted that any administration would struggle to function efficiently without the backing of a legislative majority.
At the same time, Nasheed expressed opposition to the proposal of holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.
He argued that significant institutional changes should emerge from broad political consensus rather than the agenda of a single party.
He also indicated that the reasoning behind the government’s push for simultaneous elections remains unclear.
I have no explanation as to why the government is seeking this vote today. No one can truly justify it or predict whether the ultimate outcome will be favorable or detrimental,
Former President Nasheed remarked
Nasheed further warned that conducting both elections concurrently could lead to parliamentary candidates being elected largely on the strength of the President’s popularity, potentially weakening the direct accountability between elected members and their constituents.
His latest remarks also appear to contrast with an earlier position shared on social media, where he had indicated support for holding presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.
