President Dr. Muizzu amends labor law, grants 2 year childcare leave
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has signed into law the 9th Amendment to the Employment Act.
This marks a significant update to labor regulations following its approval by the People's Majlis on March 8, 2026, during the first session's fifth sitting.
The amendment primarily aims to streamline termination procedures and revise quota fees for hiring expatriate workers, introducing clear exemption criteria for certain entities while resolving longstanding implementation hurdles.
It balances protections for employers and employees by addressing practical challenges in the labor market.
Key reforms include paid childcare leave for parents from maternity return until the child turns two, Cabinet authority to waive quota fees for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and recognition of International Labour Day as an official public holiday.
The changes took immediate effect upon ratification and publication in the Government Gazette.
