The 19-year-old rider involved in a high-speed motorcycle accident in Malé earlier this week, which resulted in the death of a 16-year-old passenger, has been released under strict conditions by the Criminal Court.

The incident occurred late on the night of the 24th near the bridge traffic lights on Boduthakurufaanu Magu.

Police said the motorcycle, driven by Mohamed Aadhin Arif, was travelling at high speed when it lost control and mounted the pavement.

A 16-year-old boy was riding as a passenger at the time.

Both were taken to hospital with injuries sustained in the crash.

However, the 16-year-old later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

According to police, Aadhin did not hold a valid driving licence for the motorcycle he was operating at the time of the accident.

Following his arrest, Aadhin was presented before the Criminal Court for a remand hearing.

During the proceedings, his legal counsel requested that he be released under stringent conditions.

The court granted the request.

The court order notes that Aadhin informed investigators the collision was not intentional and expressed remorse over the incident.

His defence sought conditional release, even under strict limitations.

Police told the court that, taking into account the injuries Aadhin sustained in the crash and provided that he cooperates fully with the ongoing investigation, they had no objection to his release under strict conditions.

Authorities have stated that any breach of the imposed conditions would result in Aadhin being taken back into custody.

The specific conditions attached to his release were not disclosed in the court order.
