BML denies blocking Amazon and AliExpress
The Bank of Maldives (BML) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that it has blocked access to international e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and AliExpress.
In a statement, the bank clarified that these platforms remain fully accessible to customers and that BML-issued cards can still be used for transactions.
The bank stressed that assertions suggesting otherwise are inaccurate.
According to BML, failed online payments are generally linked to customers exceeding their assigned foreign transaction limits.
The bank explained that most rejected transactions occur when individuals attempt to spend beyond their monthly foreign currency allocation.
Highlighting the continued popularity of international online shopping, BML revealed that between January 1 and February 21 this year, approximately 58,000 transactions were processed through Amazon and AliExpress.
The total value of these transactions amounted to USD 2.33 million.
The bank also noted instances where customers have attempted to use personal debit and credit cards for purchases that significantly exceed their declared financial capacity.
In response, BML advised businesses engaged in commercial imports to utilize the bank’s dedicated business banking services, which are structured to accommodate higher-value transactions and provide the documentation required for importing goods.
Meanwhile, broader foreign exchange measures remain in place under regulations introduced by the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).
The Foreign Exchange Act, implemented last year, requires businesses earning revenue in foreign currency to deposit those funds in local banks and exchange a designated portion through the banking system.
