Revenue generated from airport-related fees reached a record high in January, according to the latest statistics released by the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

The January revenue report shows a significant increase in collections from both Departure Tax and the Airport Development Fee (ADF) compared to the same month last year. Departure Tax revenue amounted to USD 11.7 million in January, reflecting a sharp rise from USD 7.5 million recorded in January of the previous year.

Similarly, revenue from the Airport Development Fee reached USD 12.2 million, up considerably from USD 7.6 million collected during the corresponding period last year.

The growth in revenue follows adjustments to the airport fee structure.

At present, passengers departing in Economy Class are required to pay USD 50.

Business Class passengers both Maldivians and foreign nationals are charged USD 120, an increase from the previous USD 60. Meanwhile, travellers departing via private jets are subject to a fee of USD 480.

The rise in airport-related revenue also coincides with expanded passenger capacity at Velana International Airport (VIA), following the commencement of operations at its new terminal.

The terminal was officially inaugurated on July 26 last year, marking Independence Day. Constructed by the Saudi Binladin Group at a cost exceeding MVR 5 billion, the facility is designed to accommodate up to 7.5 million passengers annually.
