Persistent haze continues to envelop much of the Maldives, driving air quality into unhealthy levels across northern and central regions, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Readings on Thursday showed Air Quality Index (AQI) values exceeding 150 classified as "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" in large areas, with Male' City (154) and northern regions (159) hitting the alarming "Unhealthy" category above 150, per IQAir data  used by the Ministry of Tourism.

These levels signal increased risks of heart and lung aggravation for the general public.

Southern areas like Addu City and Fuvahmulah remain in the safer "Moderate" range, posing concerns only for highly sensitive individuals.

The HPA has issued urgent guidance for vulnerable groups children, elderly, pregnant people, and those with respiratory issues or allergies to limit outdoor exercise, wear N95 masks outdoors, seal windows against polluted air, and operate air purifiers.

Caused by fine airborne particles that impair visibility unlike typical mist or fog, the haze has prompted warnings for seafarers to exercise extra caution during travel.

This annual phenomenon typically strikes during the Hulhangu to Iruvai Monsoon transition in December and January.
