Maldives reaffirms security cooperation with UNODC
The Maldives has reaffirmed its strong commitment to security cooperation with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), highlighting the importance of continued collaboration in addressing transnational and regional security challenges.
The reaffirmation came during a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel and the newly appointed UNODC Regional Representative for South Asia, Kristian Hӧlge, following the formal presentation of Hӧlge’s Letter of Appointment at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, Minister Khaleel emphasised the Maldives’ long-standing and close partnership with UNODC, expressing appreciation for the organisation’s sustained support.
He underscored UNODC’s critical role in assisting national efforts to combat transnational organised crime, counter terrorism, and prevent violent extremism.
Reiterating the government’s firm commitment, the Minister stated that the Maldives looks forward to working closely with UNODC on key initiatives, including preventive approaches, capacity building for national institutions, and the implementation of evidence-based policies aimed at promoting sustainable peace, security, and development.
In response, Regional Representative Hӧlge reaffirmed UNODC’s strong partnership with the Maldives and expressed readiness to further support the country’s national priorities.
He outlined UNODC’s ongoing and future programmes designed to address complex security threats facing the region.
Hӧlge also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation, noting that collaborative efforts across South Asia are essential to effectively tackle interconnected challenges such as organised crime and extremism.
Both sides concluded the meeting by agreeing to further strengthen strategic cooperation to enhance security and stability in the Maldives and the wider region.
