Maldives defeat India 5–0 in SAFF Futsal Championship
The Maldives delivered a commanding performance at the SAFF Futsal Championship, defeating India 5–0 to strengthen their hopes of lifting the tournament trophy.
The emphatic victory came in Thailand, where the Maldivian national futsal team produced a clinical display despite India dominating possession in the early stages of the match.
After weathering initial pressure, Maldives took control of the game and converted their chances with precision.
Captain Mohamed Imran opened the scoring in the eighth minute, setting the tone for the match.
Hussain Shareef doubled the lead in the 18th minute, before Ali Shamaal Abdullah added a third to give Maldives a comfortable advantage going into the break.
In the second half, Imran struck again, finishing off a well-timed pass from a teammate to make it 4–0.
Ahmed Hameed completed the rout with the fifth goal, sealing a dominant victory for the Maldives.
With the win, Maldives secured their third victory in as many matches, collecting three more points to move to nine points at the top of the table.
The team has now scored 16 goals in the tournament and holds a two-point lead over second-placed Pakistan.
Pakistan sits second with seven points after playing out a draw against Nepal earlier in the day.
India, meanwhile, remain winless in the competition, having earned just two points from four matches.
The result places the Maldives a step closer to qualification for the championship final, while also providing a significant boost to team confidence and morale.
