Authorities have issued a warning to mariners and travelers navigating waters near Malé Atoll’s Emboodhoo Finolhu after goods from a capsized vessel were reported drifting in the area.

The incident occurred on Sunday moning, when the cargo boat Balma 6 capsized near the Taj Exotica Resort.

Following the incident, the Maldives Police Service said travelers passing through the area should exercise caution due to debris from the vessel floating at sea.

In a post shared on X, police, citing information from the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), noted that the cargo is believed to be drifting westward, posing potential hazards to marine traffic.

At the time of the incident, four people were on board the vessel.

Two were rescued by a passing boat shortly after the capsize.

However, two others were reported missing, including a Maldivian national and an expatriate.

Police later confirmed that the Maldivian, identified as the captain of the vessel, was found deceased in the lagoon of the Taj Exotica Resort.

Search and rescue operations are continuing for the missing expatriate.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding the cause of the incident.
