Public warned to exercise caution over Pen Clams at Rasfannu Beach
Members of the public have been urged to remain vigilant while visiting Rasfannu Beach after pen clams were found embedded in the sand near the area in front of a restaurant currently under construction.
The warning was issued by Ali Musthafa, former principal of Ghiyasuddin International School, who shared details of the hazard in a social media post.
He explained that a large number of pen clams are buried beneath the sand, with only small portions protruding above the surface, posing a risk of cuts and injuries to bare feet.
According to Musthafa, he identified and marked the area after snorkeling, noting that the concentration of pen clams lies along a stretch frequently walked through by beachgoers, particularly during low tide.
He advised visitors to take extra care when moving through the area, especially when walking barefoot.
Musthafa also noted that while pen clams are edible, they contain only a small amount of flesh. He suggested that controlled harvesting by the public could help reduce their numbers in the swimming zone, making the area safer.
He added that the clams can be removed by gently loosening them from the sand before pulling them out.
Rasfannu is one of Malé’s most popular public beaches and is heavily frequented, particularly during morning hours.
As of now, no official statement has been issued by the relevant authorities regarding the presence of pen clams at the site.
