Naeem’s service can never be forgotten in Maldives' aviation history: President Dr. Muizzu
Former air traffic controller Mohamed Naeem Hussain, a pioneering figure in Maldivian aviation, has passed away at the age of 74.
He passed away while undergoing treatment at ADK Hospital.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu extended condolences to Naeem’s family and to the staff and management of Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), describing his decades of service as an integral part of the nation’s aviation history.
Naeem’s career at Hulhulé Airport, now Velana International Airport, spanned more than five decades, beginning in 1967 as the Maldives’ first air traffic controller.
The services rendered by the late Mohamed Naeem Hussain cannot in any way be forgotten in the history of our aviation sector,
President Dr. Muizzu said in a post on X
Over the years, Naeem’s commitment to building the Maldives’ aviation infrastructure was widely recognised.
He received air traffic control training from Thailand’s Civil Aviation Centre and pursued specialized aeronautical search and rescue training in Australia.
For many years, as the nation’s aviation sector grew, he provided his services at the national airport with full dedication,
President Muizzu added,
During Former President Ibrahim Nasir’s administration, Naeem managed the first-ever flight operations from Hulhulé Airport.
He continued to serve as the country’s sole air traffic controller until 1972, later mentoring the next generation of aviation professionals.
Despite the lack of modern facilities in the early years, Naeem’s perseverance helped lay the foundation for the Maldives’ growing aviation network.
