The Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Masood Imad, has expressed serious concern over the difficulties faced by Maldivian citizens when applying for visas to travel to or reside in Sri Lanka.

Speaking on the issue yesterday, Ambassador Masood said Maldivians are often required to endure lengthy waiting hours at immigration offices, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in order to process their visas.

He noted that Maldivian nationals do not appear to receive the same level of facilitation provided to visitors from several other countries.

The Ambassador further raised concerns over what he described as discriminatory treatment by immigration officials, questioning why certain visitors are prioritised while Maldivians face repeated delays.

He also highlighted a disparity in visa processing, stating that while individual applicants experience prolonged delays, visa applications submitted through travel agents are reportedly processed immediately.

This, he alleged, points to potential financial interests influencing the immigration process.

Ambassador Masood stressed that it is unacceptable for students and parents to be subjected to hours of waiting to obtain visas.

He warned that if the situation persists, the Maldives may be forced to review the visa arrangements currently extended to Sri Lankan professionals employed in the Maldives.

Maldivians travelling to Sri Lanka typically receive visas on arrival for short stays.

However, individuals intending to remain in the country for longer periods or to reside there are required to obtain specific long-term visas.

With a significant number of Maldivians residing in Sri Lanka for education and medical treatment, the ongoing visa-related challenges are causing considerable hardship and distress for many Maldivian families.
