Police question 102 foreign nationals in first week of night-time checks
Police have questioned 102 foreign nationals within the first week of a nationwide operation aimed at addressing unnecessary loitering during late-night hours.
According to police, the operation began on the 17th of this month following a directive announced by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
Under the directive, foreign nationals found in public spaces between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. are to be stopped and questioned, amid concerns that certain activities during these hours undermine public interest and violate social norms.
An update on the operation’s progress in the Malé region was presented at a police meeting held today.
Authorities said that of the individuals questioned, 12 who were living illegally were stopped.
In addition, information was collected from four individuals suspected of engaging in illegal business activities, with some later handed over to Maldives Immigration for further action.
Police reiterated that the inspections are conducted nightly from midnight to 6:00 a.m. and extend beyond Malé and Hulhumalé to all inhabited islands across the Maldives.
Under the operation, officers stop foreign nationals found loitering without a valid purpose and collect personal and residency-related information.
Special attention is being given to cases involving foreign nationals sleeping in public areas in Malé and Hulhumalé, to determine whether their stay in the Maldives complies with existing regulations.
Police stated that any violations identified during these checks will be addressed in accordance with the law, with individuals found to be residing illegally handed over to Maldives Immigration for appropriate action.
