NDMA urges precautions as heavy rain raises flood risk in central Maldives
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has urged the public to take precautionary measures as heavy rainfall continues to affect parts of central Maldives, raising the risk of flooding.
In a post shared on X on Saturday afternoon, the NDMA cited forecasts from the Maldives Meteorological Service, warning that intense rainfall over Malé and nearby atolls could lead to flooding in low-lying areas.
The authority also cautioned residents to remain vigilant against possible damage caused by strong winds accompanying the adverse weather.
Earlier, the Meteorological Service issued a yellow weather alert covering a large portion of central Maldives, from Lhaviyani Atoll to Vaavu Atoll, indicating potentially hazardous weather conditions.
The ongoing spell of rough weather coincides with the onset of the Northeast Monsoon, locally known as the Iruvai Monsoon.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise the public to follow official updates and take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of damage.
