Nighttime operations launched to monitor expats loitering across Maldives

The Maldives Police Service has announced the commencement of nationwide nighttime operations aimed at monitoring expatriates found loitering in public spaces without a valid purpose during late-night hours.

In a statement issued by the police, it was confirmed that the operations will begin from tonight and will be conducted daily between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

The initiative will cover all inhabited islands across the Maldives, extending beyond Malé and Hulhumalé.

As part of the operation, police officers will stop and question expatriates found outdoors during the designated hours to gather information and assess the legitimacy of their presence.

Special attention will be given to expatriates sleeping in public areas in Malé and Hulhumalé, with authorities verifying whether their residency and employment status comply with existing laws and regulations.

Police stated that actions will be taken based on the findings of these checks.

Individuals found to be residing illegally in the Maldives will be dealt with in accordance with the law, and such cases will be referred to Maldives Immigration for further action.

The announcement follows remarks by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who noted that certain expatriates residing in the Maldives have been engaging in activities during late-night hours that undermine public interest and violate established social norms.
