Villa Group donates USD 100,000 to aid to Sri Lanka
Villa Group, owned by prominent Maldivian businessman Qasim Ibrahim, has donated USD 100,000 to support Sri Lanka’s recovery from the widespread destruction caused by Cyclone "Ditwah".
The contribution is part of a broader Maldivian relief effort involving major businesses, state institutions, and the general public.
Villa Group’s assistance was formally handed over by Siyad Qasim, CEO of Villa Resorts and son of Qasim Ibrahim, to Mohamed Rizvi Hassen, the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Maldives.
The donation is intended to help address urgent humanitarian needs as Sri Lanka grapples with massive displacement, infrastructure damage, and mounting recovery costs.
The death toll from Cyclone "Ditwah" has climbed to 334, with nearly 400 people still missing as search and rescue operations continue in multiple districts.
The Kandy region has reported the highest number of fatalities so far, underscoring the severity of landslides and flooding in central Sri Lanka.
A state of emergency has been declared, and about one-third of the country is currently without water and electricity, further compounding the crisis.
In addition to private donations like that from Villa Group, Maldivian government companies and institutions are channeling support through a special telethon titled “Maldivians with Ceylon.”
The telethon has so far raised over MVR 11 million, with contributions flowing in from individuals and organizations alike.
Members of the public are also donating generously to fund boxes placed across Malé, Hulhumalé, and Villingili, reflecting broad national solidarity with Sri Lanka.
