The Maldives has announced a humanitarian donation of USD 50,000 and 25,000 cases of canned fish to support Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts following the devastating rains and flooding caused by Cyclonic Storm Ditwah.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the assistance is aimed at helping communities affected by widespread flooding and landslides across Sri Lanka.

The government noted that the assistance reflects the close and enduring friendship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka, as well as the solidarity of the Maldivian people during this difficult time.

The statement added that the Maldives hopes the support will offer meaningful relief to affected communities in Sri Lanka and complement the broader efforts being undertaken to aid the country’s recovery.

Sri Lanka has reported at least 123 deaths, while 130 people remain missing after days of intense rainfall triggered by the cyclone.

The Maldivian High Commission in Colombo confirmed that no Maldivians have been reported injured or missing.

A Maldivian family in Nuwara Eliya who were briefly out of contact has since been reached and confirmed safe.

The High Commission has urged Maldivians in Sri Lanka to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, stay clear of flooded areas, and keep essential supplies, medications, and documents secure amid the ongoing severe weather.
