The Maldives High Commission in Sri Lanka has issued a severe weather advisory urging Maldivian nationals in the country to take precautions as Sri Lanka experiences strong winds, heavy rainfall and heightened flood and landslide risks.

According to the advisory, Cyclone Ditwah has developed near Sri Lanka, bringing the threat of rough seas and damaging winds across the island.

The Sri Lanka Department of Meteorology has issued a red-level heavy rain warning for the entire country, valid until 8:30 p.m. on 28 November 2025.

Amid worsening conditions, the Sri Lankan government has declared 28 November a public holiday for all government offices except essential services.

The High Commission has advised Maldivians residing, studying or travelling in Sri Lanka to avoid non-essential travel, especially to flood-prone and landslide-prone areas, and to remain indoors during periods of heavy rain.

Citizens are also urged to follow official updates from the Meteorological Department and the Disaster Management Centre.

Additional safety measures include keeping essential supplies such as water, medication and documents ready, ensuring passports and identification remain accessible, avoiding rivers and coastal areas due to rising water levels, and relocating to safer ground if living in low-lying or high-risk areas.

For emergencies, Maldivian nationals may contact the High Commission hotline at +94 77 722 8800 or email [email protected].

The High Commission stated that it will continue monitoring the situation and issue further updates as needed.
