The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has imposed an immediate ban on the import and sale of a U.S.-made infant formula after detecting a dangerous bacteria linked to severe illness.

In a statement, MFDA said ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula was found to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, the bacterium responsible for botulism, a rare but potentially life-threatening condition that causes progressive muscle paralysis.

According to MFDA, the World Health Organization’s Food Safety Authorities Network alerted them that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had identified the bacteria in samples of the formula manufactured in the United States.

Following the discovery, the product was recalled internationally, with instructions for disposal.

As a precautionary measure, MFDA has now prohibited all batches of this brand from entering or being sold in the Maldives and urged the public to discontinue use immediately.
