Nearly three centuries on, Dhonbandaarain’s enduring legacy lives on: President Dr Muizzu
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the wisdom, foresight, and lasting legacy of national hero Dhonbandaarain continue to inspire the Maldives nearly 300 years after the country’s historic liberation.
In a message shared on his official X account to mark Huravee Day, the President reflected on the events that unfolded 281 years ago, when the nation rose against foreign occupation.
He highlighted the betrayal that led to parts of Malé being set on fire, the abduction of the then-reigning monarch, and the immense suffering endured by the Maldivian people.
Despite these challenges, he noted, the spirit of resistance ultimately triumphed.
The President extended warm Huravee Day greetings to the public and offered prayers to Allah for the continued peace, stability, and prosperity of the Maldives.
First Lady Sajidha Mohamed also issued a message on the occasion.
She conveyed her greetings to the Maldivian people and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the extraordinary sacrifice made by Dhonbandaarain, underscoring its profound importance in shaping the nation’s identity.
Huravee Day is observed annually on the third day of Jumad al-Akhirah to honour the bravery of Dhonbandaarain and to reaffirm national pride, patriotism, and resilience in safeguarding Maldives’ sovereignty.
